It would be nice to be able to send thumbnails from clients in advance of the contents they thumbnail, to give perceptually fast file transfer - especially if combined with streaming file transfers. The event structure doesn't let us do that currently - and server-side thumbnail generation gets in the way too. We'd need to find a way to discourage clients from lying about their thumbnails.
