I tested some other devices
-> Nexus 6 devices (Lolilop / Motorola devices).
The gmail application has no badge when there are some unseen (or unread) messages.
The notification does not seem to contain any unread messages counter
-> Moto Razr HD (XT925)
The email application has badge not matrix app.

The application badges are not managed by some launchers.
The frequently used trick consists in updating the application icon (by using activity-alias).
a new message -> disable previous application icon -> enable the new one (i.e. with the unread message count drawn on it).
It seems being used in motoemail.apk (Motorola's email client application).
The choosen fix consists in displaying the counter in the notification (in the avatar top right).
