As well as the issues listed here, there are bug reports at

beginners to work on, but unfortunately we are not very good at using
this tag. Bugs tagged "help" are ones where assistance is required,
but may be difficult to fix. Bugs with severity "important" or higher
are the ones we consider more important, but these also may be
difficult to fix. Bugs with severity "minor" may be simpler, but this
is not always true.
* High Priority Items
** Overhaul the customization groups.
The goal is to present new Emacs users with a reasonable and useful
hierarchy of customization groups, thus allowing them to easily find a
customization options they are looking for, by going down this
hierarchy.
The current customization groups (see "M-x customize-group RET RET") and
their hierarchy are sporadic and do not systematically cover all the
areas and domains of Emacs features. They need to be extensively
re-thought and overhauled. One idea is to take the top-level chapters
of the Emacs user manual and use those as customization groups, then
define sub-groups using the sections. Sub-sections could then be used
where a third level of groups makes sense. The place to define this
hierarchy is mainly in cus-edit.el.
Once the two- or three-level hierarchy of defgroups is defined, all the
defcustom's should be audited and their groups redefined if necessary.
** Things related to elpa.gnu.org.
We need to figure out how to best include GNU ELPA packages in the
Emacs tarball before doing any of the items below.

* Simple tasks
These don't require much Emacs knowledge and are suitable for anyone
from beginners to experts.
** Convert modes that use view-mode to be derived from special-mode instead
** Major modes should have a menu entry
** Check if all items on the mode-line have a suitable tooltip for all modes
** edebug and debugger-mode should have a toolbar
It can use the same icons as gud.
** Check what minor modes don't use define-minor-mode
Convert those to use it.
** Remove unnecessary autoload cookies from defcustoms
This needs a bit of care, since often people have become used to
expecting such variables to always be defined, for example when they
modify things in their .emacs.
** See if other files can use generated-autoload-file (see e.g. ps-print)
** Do interactive mode tagging for commands
Change "(interactive)" to "(interactive nil foo-mode)" for command
completion purposes. Pick a major mode or ELisp library, and check
all interactive commands to see if they are only relevant in one
particular mode. This requires care as some commands might be useful
outside of the mode they were written for.
** Convert defvar foo-mode-map to defvar-keymap
Verify the conversion by comparing the value of the keymap before
converting it and after (you can see the value in 'C-h v').
** Change documentation examples to use 'setopt' instead of 'setq'
User options are variables defined with 'defcustom', as opposed to
'defvar' or 'defconst'. It is preferable to use 'setopt' to set user
options instead of 'setq', since it will execute any custom-set form
associated with that variable. Pick a package and make sure that it
uses 'setopt' in any examples in its documentation (doc strings, manual,
Commentary section, etc.). Note that 'setopt' is new in Emacs 29.1, so
packages that need support for earlier versions should still use 'setq'.
** Write more tests
Pick a fixed bug from the database, write a test case to make sure it
stays fixed. Or pick your favorite programming major-mode, and write
a test for its indentation. Or a version control backend, and write a
test for its status parser. Etc. See the 'test' directory for
examples.
* Small but important fixes needed in existing features
** A better display of the bar cursor
Distribute a bar cursor of width > 1 evenly between the two glyphs on
each side of the bar (what to do at the edges?).

At the moment, invisible text is placed in the kill-ring, so that the
contents of the ring may not correspond to the text as displayed to
the user. It ought to be possible to omit text which is invisible
(due to a text-property, overlay, or selective display) from the
kill-ring.
** Change cursor shape when Emacs is idle
When Emacs is idle for more than a specified time, change the cursor
shape to indicate the idleness.
** Improve buttons in the Custom buffer
The buttons at the top of a Custom buffer should not omit variables
whose values are currently hidden.
** Clean up the variables in browse-url
Perhaps use a shell command string to specify the browser instead of
the mushrooming set of functions.

Currently, we replace the "*note" cross-reference indicators with a
hard-coded "see", which is English-centric and doesn't look well in
manuals written in languages other than English. To fix this, we need
a change in the Texinfo's 'makeinfo' program so that it records the
document's language (specified via the @documentlanguage directive in
Texinfo) in a variable in the Local Variables section of the produced
Info file. Then 'Info-fontify-node' should be modified to look up the
translation of "see" to that language in a database (which should be
added), and should use that translation instead of "see". See this

functions don't go through Ffuncall/funcall_lambda/exec_byte_code but instead
stay within exec_byte_code.

Recognize immutable (lexical) bindings and get rid of them if they're
used only once and/or they're bound to a constant expression.
Such things aren't present in hand-written code, but macro expansion and
defsubst can often end up generating things like
(funcall (lambda (arg) (body)) actual) which then get optimized to
(let ((arg actual)) (body)) but should additionally get optimized further
when 'actual' is a constant/copyable expression.
** Add an "indirect goto" byte-code
Such a byte-code can be used for local lambda expressions.
E.g. when you have code like

turn those 'funcalls' into jumps and their return into indirect jumps back.

** Support ligatures out of the box

(Note that in general, the number of possible ligatures can be much
larger, and there's no way, in principle, to specify the superset of
all the ligatures that could exist. Each font can support different
ligatures. The reliable way of supporting any and all ligatures is to
hand all text to be displayed to the shaping engine and get back the
font glyphs to display that text. However, doing this is impossible
with the current design of the Emacs display engine, since it examines
buffer text one character at a time, and implements character
composition by calls to Lisp, which makes doing this for every
character impractically slow. Therefore, the rest of this item
describes a limited form of ligature support which is compatible with
the current display engine design and uses automatic compositions.)
For Text and derived modes, the job is to figure out which ligatures
we want to support, how to let the user customize that, and probably
define a minor mode for automatic ligation (as some contexts might not
want, say, "fi" or "ff" always yield a ligature, and also because it
might slow down redisplay, because character composition goes through
Lisp).
For ligature support in programming language modes, one can look at
the various add-on packages out there that provide the feature via
prettify-symbols-mode. We need to figure out which ligatures are
needed for each programming language, and provide user options to turn
this on and off.
The implementation should use the infrastructure for automatic
character compositions, i.e., we should define appropriate
regexp-based rules for character sequences that need to be composed
into ligatures, and populate composition-function-table with those
rules. See composite.el for examples of this, and also grep
lisp/language/*.el for references to composition-function-table.
One problem with character compositions that will need to be solved is
that composition-function-table, the char-table which holds the
composition rules, is a global variable, whereas use of ligatures is
inherently specific to buffer-local stuff like the major mode and the
script or language in use. So there should be a buffer-local variable
to augment/customize/override the global composition rules.
Another problem is that ligatures are frequently composed of ASCII
characters, and some of those ASCII characters are present in the mode
line, for example "--". Since displaying a ligature instead of 2
separate '-' characters on a mode line is not right, there should be a
way of preventing the ligation from happening. One possibility is to
have a ZWNJ character separate these ASCII characters; another
possibility is to introduce a special text property that prevents
character composition, and place that property on the relevant parts
of the mode line. Yet another possibility would be to write a
specialized composition function, which would detect that it is called
on mode-line strings, and return nil to signal that composition is not
possible in this case; then use that function in the rules for
ligatures stored in composition-function-table.
The prettify-symbols-mode should be deprecated once ligature support
is in place.
A related, but somewhat independent, feature is being able to move the
cursor "into a ligature", whereby cursor motion commands shows some
pseudo-cursor on some part of a ligature. For example, if "ffi" is
displayed as a ligature, then moving by one buffer position should
show the middle part of the ligature's glyph similar to the cursor
display: some special background and perhaps also a special
foreground. There are two possible ways of figuring out the offset at
which to display the pseudo-cursor:
. Arbitrarily divide the ligature's glyph width W into N parts,
where N is the number of codepoints composed into the ligature, then
move that pseudo-cursor by W/N pixels each time a cursor-motion
command is invoked;
. Use the font information. For example, HarfBuzz has the
hb_ot_layout_get_ligature_carets API for that purpose. However,
it could be that few fonts actually have that information recorded
in them, in which case the previous heuristics will be needed as
fallback.
One subtle issue needs to be resolved to have this feature of
"sub-glyph" cursor movement inside composed characters. The way Emacs
currently displays the default block cursor is by simply redrawing the
glyph at point in reverse video. So Emacs currently doesn't have a
way of displaying a cursor that "covers" only part of a glyph. To
make this happen, the display code will probably need to be changed to
draw the cursor as part of drawing the foreground and/or background of
the corresponding glyph, which is against the current flow of the
display code: it generally first completely draws the background and
foreground of the entire text that needs to be redrawn, and only then
draws the cursor where it should be placed.
** Support for Stylistic Sets
This will allow using "alternate glyphs" supported by modern fonts.

One possible way of letting Lisp program support this would be to
introduce a new text property 'stylistic-set' whose value will be the
set name(s), a symbol or a list of symbols. Characters that have this
property should be processed specially by 'get_glyph_face_and_encoding':
instead of calling the 'encode_char' method of the font driver, we
should invoke the 'shape' method. 'hbfont_shape' should be extended
to pass to 'hb_shape_full' the required array of features, as
mentioned in the above HarfBuzz discussion.
Alternatively, stylistic sets could be a font property, or a face

** Concurrency
Stefan Monnier writes: "Including it as an 'experimental' compile-time
option sounds good. Of course there might still be big questions
around 'which form of concurrency' we'll want."
** Better support for displaying Emoji
Emacs is capable of displaying Emoji and some of the Emoji sequences,
provided that its fontsets are configured with a suitable font. To
make this easier out of the box, the following should be done:
*** Special face for displaying text presentation of Emoji
Emoji-capable fonts support Emoji sequences with the U+FE0F VARIATION
SELECTOR-16 (VS16) for emoji-style display, but usually don't support
the U+FE0F VARIATION SELECTOR-15 (VS15) for text-style display. There
are other fonts which support the text-style sequences, but not
emoji-style. Since Emacs selects a font based on a single character,
it cannot choose 2 different fonts for displaying both styles of the
same base character. To display both styles in the same buffer, one
could use a special face, placing a 'face' text property on portions
of the text. This special face could specify a specific font known to
support text-style Emoji sequences. Emacs could have such a face
built-in.

** Extend text-properties and overlays
*** Several text-property planes
This would get us rid of font-lock-face property (and I'd be happy to
get rid of char-property-alias-alist as well) since font-lock would
simply use the 'face' property in the 'font-lock' plane.
Basically 'put-text-property' and friends would take an extra argument PLANE
(maybe the best backward-compatible way to do that is to make it so that
PROPERTY can be a cons cell (PLANE . PROP)). So font-lock would
do (put-text-property start end '(font-lock . face) value).
All the properties coming from the various planes would get merged via an Elisp
function (so it can merge 'face' differently than 'keymap' or it could give
different priorities to different planes (we could imagine enabling/disabling
planes)). The merging would not happen lazily while looking up properties but
instead it would take place eagerly in 'add-text-properties'. This is based on
the idea that it's much more frequent to lookup properties than to
modify them. Also, when properties are looked up during redisplay, we
generally can't run Elisp code, whereas we generally can do that when
properties are added.
** Implement Unicode-compliant display of "default-ignorable" characters
See the "Characters Ignored for Display" section of paragraph 5.21 in
the Unicode Standard for the details.
The implementation would import the data from Unicode UCD file
DerivedCoreProperties.txt, and provide a minor mode that arranges for
the characters with the Default_Ignorable_Code_Point (DI) property to
be hidden on display. One way of implementing that could be via
glyphless-char-display-control; that one is global, but maybe there's
a way of making it buffer-local. Alternatively, this could be
implemented in C in the display engine.
An additional aspect of this is the display of U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN as
invisible except at line boundaries. Note that this would need to
support hard (physical) newlines in the buffer as well as soft
wrapping of long lines under 'visual-line-mode'. The algorithm for
selecting the wrap point may also need be changed to break at the soft
hyphen.
** Support external rules for indentation
This should teach Emacs to read indentation rules from a file and use
them in preference to the user customizations and the built-in
defaults. An example of such rule files is '.clang-format', see
https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ClangFormatStyleOptions.html
As a minimum, there should be a command, a variant of indent-region,
which could be told to use the rules from such a file, and should then
reformat the region of source code according to the rules.
The next step is to use these rules during editing of files residing
in a directory that has such an indentation-rules spec in it.

** Add indentation guide support to the display engine
Support vertical lines that indicate the current level of indentation,
which is useful when editing source code. This feature should be
implemented in the display engine.

One way of doing this is to start with fx's dynamic loading, and use it
to implement things like auto-loaded buffer parsers and database
access in cases which need more than Lisp.

This could use code like that of customize-groups.
** Display something in the margin on lines that have compilation errors
** Compilation error navigation bar, parallel to the scroll bar
The bar should indicate where in the buffer there are compilation
errors. Perhaps we could arrange to display these error indications
on top of the scroll bar itself. That depends on to what extent
toolkit scroll bars are extensible.
** Provide user-friendly ways to list all available font families
Also for listing fonts, displaying a font as a sample, etc.
** Provide a convenient way to select a color with the mouse
** Rewrite the face code to be simpler, clearer and faster
** Program Enriched mode to read and save in RTF
Is there actually a decent single definition of RTF? Maybe see info at
https://latex2rtf.sourceforge.net/.
This task seems to be addressed by

I don't know if this is still relevant. I can't reach the URLs in
the above message thread and double-buffering may have solved some
of the problems.
** Add a "current vertical pixel level" value
This should go with point, so that motion commands can also move
through tall images. This value would be to point as window-vscroll
is to window-start.
** Make redisplay smarter about which parts to redraw
Currently, redisplay has only 2 levels of redrawing: either it
redisplays only the selected window on the selected frame, or it
redisplays all the windows on all the frames. This doesn't scale well
when the number of visible frames is large.
Currently, two variables are used to make the decision what to
redisplay: update_mode_lines and windows_or_buffers_changed. These
are set by various functions called from Lisp, and if redisplay finds
one of them to be non-zero, it considers all the windows on all the
frames for redisplay.
The idea is to make the decision which parts need to be redrawn more
fine-grained. Instead of simple boolean variables, we could have a
bitmapped variable which records the kinds of changes done by Lisp
since the previous redisplay cycle. Then the decision what exactly
needs to be redrawn could be made based on the bits that are set.
For example, one reason to consider all frames is that some scrolling
command sets the update_mode_lines variable non-zero. This is done
because the frame title, which doesn't belong to any window, needs to
be reconsidered when the selected window is scrolled. But considering
the frame title doesn't have to redisplay all the other windows on the
frame, doesn't need to recompute the menu items and the tool-bar
buttons, and doesn't need to consider frames other than the selected
one. Being selective about what parts of the Emacs display need to be
reconsidered and redrawn given the changes since the last redisplay
will go along way towards making redisplay more scalable.
One way of making this change is to go through all the places that set
update_mode_lines and windows_or_buffers_changed, figure out which
portions of the Emacs display could be affected by each change, and
then implement the bitmap which will record each of these affected
display portions. The logic in redisplay_internal will then need to
be restructured so as to support this fine-grained redisplay.
** Address internationalization of symbols names
Essentially as if they were documentation, e.g. in command names and
Custom.
** Make the Lucid menu widget display multilingual text
This probably needs to be done from actual Emacs buffers, either
directly in the menu or by rendering in an unmapped window and copying
the pixels. The current code assumes a specific locale; that isn't
good enough even if X can render the arbitrary text. The gtk port now
displays multilingual text in menus, but only insofar as Emacs can
encode it as utf-8 and gtk can display the result. Maybe making
Lucid menus work like Gtk's (i.e. just force utf-8) is good enough now
that Emacs can encode most chars into utf-8.
** The GNUstep port needs some serious attention
Ideally from someone familiar with GNUstep and Objective C.

** A more modern printing interface
A UI that pops up a dialog that lets you choose printer, page style,
etc. Integration with the Gtk print dialog is apparently difficult.

Allow Emacs to fit better to a user's locale. Currently Emacs uses
UTF-8 language environment for all UTF-8 locales, thus a user in
ja_JP.UTF-8 locale are also put in UTF-8 language environment. In
such a case, it is better to use Japanese language environment, while
preferring the utf-8 coding system.
** Enhance locale handling
Handle language, territory and charset orthogonally, and de-emphasize
language environments. Use the locale to set up more things, such as
fontsets, the default Ispell dictionary, diary format, calendar
holidays and display, quoting characters and phrase boundaries,
sentence endings, collation for sorting (at least for unicodes), HTTP
Accept-language, patterns for directory listings and compilation
messages, yes-or-no replies, common menu items when the toolkit
supports it ... 'locale-info' needs extending for LC_COLLATE &c. [fx
started on this.]
** Enhance word boundary detection
This is needed for scripts that don't use space at word boundary
(e.g., Thai).
** Implement interface programs with major Japanese input methods
The idea is to write programs in lib-src for interfacing with Japanese
conversion servers so that they can be used from the input method
"japanese". Currently, most Japanese users are using external
packages (e.g. tamago, anthy) or an input method via XIM.

in the same CU don't have to go through funcall. If one of these
functions is redefined, a trampoline is compiled and installed to
restore the redirection through funcall.
**** Better runtime function inlining
Several functions could be open-coded in generated code once exposed to
libgccjit. Two simple first candidates are probably 'maybe_quit' and
'maybe_gc'.

The native compiler should make use of function type declarations (when

**** Improved xwidgets support
Emacs 25 has support for xwidgets, a system to include WebKit widgets
into an Emacs buffer.
They work on NS, but not very well. This is because the NS code has
not been updated to keep with recent changes to the X11 and GTK code.
Many features do not work correctly on NS, such as:
- xwidget-webkit-edit-mode
- xwidget-webkit-isearch-mode
- xwidget-webkit-browse-history.
**** Respect 'frame-inhibit-implied-resize'
When the variable 'frame-inhibit-implied-resize' is non-nil, frames
should not be resized when operations like changing font or toggling
the tool bar is performed.
Unfortunately, the tool bar (and possible other operations) always
resize the frame.
**** Tooltip properties
Tooltip properties like the background color and font are hard-wired,
even though Emacs allows a user to customize such features.
*** New features
This section contains features unique to Nextstep and/or macOS.
**** PressAndHold for writing accented character
On macOS, many application support the press and hold pattern to
invoke a menu of accented characters. (See example at
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201586 .)
Currently, this doesn't work in Emacs.
Note that "ns-win.el" explicitly disables this.
Note: This feature might not be allowed to be implemented until also
implemented in Emacs for a free system.
**** Floating scroll bars
In modern macOS applications, the scroll bar often floats over the
content, and is invisible unless actually used. This makes the user
interface less cluttered and more area could be used to contain text.
With floating scroll bars, the user interface would look like it does
when they are disabled today. However, they will be made visible when
a scroll action is initiated, e.g. by putting two fingers on a
trackpad.
Note: This feature might not be allowed to be implemented until also
implemented in Emacs for a free system.
*** Features from the "mac" port
This section contains features available in the "mac" Emacs port.
As the "mac" port (as of this writing) isn't an official Emacs port,
it might contain features not following the FSF rule "must exist on
free systems".
The "mac" port is based on the Emacs 22 C-based Carbon interface.
It has been maintained in parallel to the official Cocoa-based NS
interface. The Carbon interface has been enhanced, and a number of the
features of that interface could be implemented NS.
**** Mouse gestures
The "mac" port defines the gestures 'swipe-left/right/up/down',
'magnify-up/down', and 'rotate-left/right'.
The magnify gestures have now been implemented on X11 and NS. The
event is named differently: it is named `pinch', but it does the same
thing.
Someone needs to figure out what the other gestures do in the Mac
port, implement them on X, and then following that, on NS.
**** Synthesize bold fonts

**** Key bindings of CMD and ALT
Currently in the "ns" port, ALT is bound to Meta and CMD is bound to
Super -- allowing the user to use typical macOS commands like CMD-A to
mark everything.
Unfortunately, when using an international keyboard, you can't type
normal characters like "(" etc.
There are many alternative key bindings. One solution is to bind CMD
to Meta and pass ALT to the system. In fact, this is what Emacs did up
to, and including, version 22. Also, this is how the "mac" port binds
the keys.
One could envision asymmetrical variants as well, however, this is
inappropriate for the default setting.

**** Regression test system (or at least a checklist)
Today, after each change to the user interface, Emacs must be manually
tested. Often, small details are overlooked ("Oh, I didn't test
toggling the tool-bar in one of the full screen modes, when multiple
frame were open -- silly me.")
It would be an enormous help if this could be tested automatically.
Many features are generic, however, the NS interface provides a number
of unique features.

Emacs can be built in a number of different ways. For each feature,
consider if is really is "NS" specific, or if it should be applied to
all build versions.
- With the "NS" interface. This is the normal way to build Emacs on
macOS.
- With the "X11" interface. On macOS, this is mainly of interest to
developers of Emacs to get a "reference" interface implementations.
However, it might be of interest for people working remotely, as X11
applications can be used over a network connection.
- Console only.
*** Bugs
**** Toggling the toolbar in fullheight or maximized modes
The toolbar, in the NS interface, is not considered part of the text
area. When it is toggled, the Emacs frame change height accordingly.
Unfortunately, this also occurs when the frame is in fullheight or
maximized modes (N.B. this is not the same as "fullscreen"). The
effect is that the full frame size either increases (stretching down
below the lower edge of the screen) or decreases (leaving space
between the lower edge of the frame and the lower edge of the screen).
A better solution would be for the frame to retain its size,
i.e. change the text area.
This is related to the 'frame-inhibit-implied-resize' issue.
**** The event loop does not redraw
A problem is that redraw don't happen during resize,
because we can't break out from the NSapp loop during resize.
There was a special trick to detect mouse press in the lower right
corner and track mouse movements, but this did not work well, and was
not scalable to the new Lion "resize on every window edge" behavior.
[As of trunk r109635, 2012-08-15, the event loop no longer polls.]

Two important use cases: (1) comments and strings in program sources,
and (2) text with markup, like HTML or XML.
One idea is to invent a special text property that would instruct the
display engine to reorder only the parts of buffer text covered by
that property. The display engine will then push its state onto the
iterator stack, restrict the bidi iterator to accessing only the
portion of buffer text covered by the property, reorder the text, then
pop its state from stack and continue as usual. This will require
minor changes in the bidi_it structure.
This design requires Lisp-level code to put the text properties on the
relevant parts of the buffer text. That could be done using JIT
fontifications, or as a preliminary processing when the file is
visited. With HTML/XML, the code that puts text properties needs to
pay attention to the bidi directives embedded in the HTML/XML stream.
*** Allow the user to control the direction of the UI
**** Introduce user option to control direction of mode line
One problem is the header line, which is produced by the same routines
as the mode line. While it makes sense to have the mode-line
direction controlled by a single global variable, header lines are
buffer-specific, so they need a separate treatment in this regard.
**** User options to control direction of menu bar and tool bar
For the tool bar, it's relatively easy: set it.paragraph_embedding
in redisplay_tool_bar according to the user variable, and make
f->desired_tool_bar_string multibyte with STRING_SET_MULTIBYTE. Some
minor changes will be needed to set the right_box_line_p and
left_box_line_p flags correctly for the R2L tool bar.
However, it makes no sense to display the tool bar right to left if
the menu bar cannot be displayed in the same direction.
R2L menu bar is tricky for the same reasons as the mode line. In
addition, toolkit builds create their menu bars in toolkit-specific
parts of code, bypassing xdisp.c, so those parts need to be enhanced
with toolkit-specific code to display the menu bar right to left.

If defcustom A specifies :set-after '(B), then if a user customizes
both A and B, custom will set A after B. But if the user only customizes
A, then if B is already defined, it gets left at its original setting.

Emacs doesn't use the bottom-right corner of a TTY when terminfo

** Replace tramp-archive.el by a native libarchive(3) implementation.
The former is based on the GVFS archive backend, which makes it
available on GNU/Linux only. That implementation has further
drawbacks like it doesn't support to write into archives.
** Provide support for CFF outlines in the Android port.
The file src/sfnt.c supplies the font backend for the Android port.
It is presently a self contained TrueType scaler, implementing both a
grayscale outline generator and an instruction code interpreter.
Support for CFF (Compact Font Format) outlines will facilitate
utilizing fonts distributed as ".otf" files, a category that currently
encompasses all CJK and some Middle Eastern and Indic fonts
distributed with Android, obviating the present requirement for users
of such scripts to actively install TrueType versions of fonts
otherwise bundled with the system.
* Other known bugs
** 'make-frame' forgets unhandled parameters, at least for X11 frames
** Problem with comment-start
A two-char comment-starter whose two chars are symbol constituents will
not be noticed if it appears within a word.
** Multi-pointer X does not work very well
Emacs is reasonably usable under a multi-pointer X (MPX) environment,
if you turn off tooltips and mouse highlight, and don't use anything
that calls `mouse-position'. Otherwise, tooltips are shown next to
the wrong pointer, mouse highlight simply goes haywire, and
`mouse-position' returns information for the wrong pointer.
This could be easily fixed in principle, but I cannot find a stable
enough environment under which the fix can be tested.
The MPX code has not been tested under X toolkit or GTK+ 2.x builds
and is not expected to work there.
** Framework for doing animations
Emacs does animations all over the place, usually "pulse" animations.
These currently animate by waiting for a small but fixed amount of
time between each redisplay, which causes screen tearing by not
synchronizing with the vertical refresh. Frame synchronization works
by causing redisplay to delay until the next time the monitor can
refresh; this works, but can cause substandard frame rate when
redisplay happens less often than the monitor refreshing, as redisplay
will have to continually wait for missed monitor refresh.
The right remedy for this problem is to define a function that returns
the amount of time remaining before the next vertical blanking period,
and to schedule animation redisplay within that period, using the
information provided by the _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN and
_NET_WM_FRAME_TIMINGS compositor messages on X and the
BScreen::GetMonitorInfo function on Haiku. Ideally, all features
performing animations should be modified to use that method of
scheduling redisplay. Examples include xref-pulse-momentarily and
pixel-scroll-precision-start-momentum.
