With this change pulumi-yaml can pick up local provider and attach to it
from PULUMI_DEBUG_PROVIDERS for the purposes of schema resolution, which
enables using non-existent test-only providers. Before the change it
would fail hard trying to download it.

Fixes https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi/issues/15467.
This tightens the restriction on paths passed to `NewProgramInfo`.
Previously it allowed relative paths like "./providers/my_provider".
That is now an error. This is correct behaviour. The fields of this
structure are passed via protobuf and the descriptions for them in the
proto spec are that they should always be absolute paths.
Where we build plugin paths we ensure that if they're relative we
resolve them to what they are relative to. That is generally _not_ the
current working directory so `filepath.Abs` doesn't do the right thing
here.

# Description

This adds support to the engine for "remote transformations".
A transform is "remote" because it is being invoked via the engine on
receiving a resource registration, rather than being ran locally in
process before sending a resource registration. These transforms can
also span multiple process boundaries, e.g. a transform function in a
user program, then a transform function in a component library, both
running for a resource registered by another component library.
The underlying new feature here is the idea of a `Callback`. The
expectation is we're going to use callbacks for multiple features so
these are _not_ defined in terms of transformations. A callback is an
untyped byte array (usually will be a protobuf message), plus an address
to define which server should be invoked to do the callback, and a token
to identify it.
A language sdk can start up and serve a `Callbacks` service, keep a
mapping of tokens to in-process functions (currently just using UUID's
for this), and then pass that service address and token to the engine to
be invoked later on.
The engine uses these callbacks to track transformations callbacks per
resource, and on a new resource registrations invokes each relevant
callback with the resource properties and options, having new properties
and options returned that are then passed to the next relevant transform
callback until all have been called and the engine has the final
resource state and options to use.

This adds a new flag to provider Construct and Call requests to indicate
that the engine will accept output values in the response.
If a component provider sees that flag set they can return Output
PropertyValues and optionally skip filling in the dependency map in the
response.
The engine will use the combined information of the dependency map and
any dependencies found on any output values in the property to build the
final dependency map that is returned to programs.

In preparation for deprecating non-project mode at some point. This is
phase 1 of encouraging users off of legacy mode.
Any time a user opens a backend in legacy mode (either old states, or
new states with DIY_BACKEND_LEGACY_LAYOUT set) we'll warn that
non-project mode is due to deprecate this year.
They can disable this warning by setting
PULUMI_DIY_BACKEND_ACKNOWLEDGE_LEGACY_WARNING to true.
The next phase (in a few months) will turn this into an error which
they'll be able to opt out of by setting
PULUMI_DIY_BACKEND_ACKNOWLEDGE_LEGACY_ERROR to true.
After that it will be a hard error and all non-project related code will
be removed.

This weakens the contract of GetProgramDependencies that the versions
returned are just "strings". The format of those strings is defined by
the language plugin. This is especially useful for python which uses
PEP440 not semantic versions for it's pip dependencies.
There wasn't anywhere in the system that took a strong dependency on
these being semvers.

So it turned out that the server code for providers was set up to never
return output values. I don't think any actual providers used this code
but it meant the tests running in GRPC mode started to fail.

Fix an issue with UpgradeToOutputValues that tripped an assert in
ResourceReferences.
Also shouldn't matter much but made UpgradeToOutputValues require
KeepOutputValues set as well.
Adds support for suppressing the periodic "..." printing that can
disrupt normal output stream. This output is still deemed necessary to
include by default for CI systems that might otherwise cancel an update
that goes for a long time without printing anything. But we now have an
option to turn this off.
Notes:
1. We want to expose this via Automtation API, and may even want to
default to off via Automation API?

This adds a new option `UpgradeToOutputValues` to `MarshalOptions`. When
set all `Computed` and `Unknown` values are _upgraded_ to `Output`
values. This reduces the number of cases that need to be handled later
in the codebase.

This goes through the codebase to try and be consistent about names for
the diy/filestate/local/selfmanaged backend. Every reference to this
backend should now use the terms "DIY". There are a couple of places
that still say "local DIY backend" this is referring to a DIY backend
using the local filesystem (i.e. `pulumi login --local`).

# Description
If project settings are not valid `contract.Requiref(proj.Validate() ==
nil, "proj", "Validate()")` just returns `Validate()` which makes it
difficult to debug why the call to `proj.Validate()` failed. This change
captures the error returned by `proj.Validate()` and includes that as
part of the message.

# Description
I had a question about how to configure the Go Automation SDK to use
Pulumi Cloud as a backend. This adds documentation to make things easier
for the next person with the same question by clarifying what values to
use in different situations.

# Description
This PR is motivated by https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi/pull/15145.
`resource.*` should be built on top of `property.Value`,[^1] which means
that `resource`
needs to be able to import `property.Value`, and so `property` cannot
import
`resource`. Since Assets and Archives are both types of properties, they
must be moved out
of `resource`.
[^1]: For example:
a1d686227c/sdk/go/common/resource/resource_state.go (L35-L36)
## Open Question
This PR moves them to their own sub-folders in `resource`. Should
`asset` and `archive`
live somewhere more high level, like `sdk/go/property/{asset,archive}`?

14532 was just for Remote and Component, but since raising that we've
added LogicalName as well so this PR also adds support for that.

We are using our terminal in raw mode, which means we're not getting CRs
automatically added. Add one after a progress bar has finished to
improve the output slightly.
The final output after this looks like:
```
$ pulumi preview
Please choose a stack, or create a new one: dev
Previewing update (dev):
Downloading plugin: 18.39 MiB / 18.39 MiB [========================] 100.00% 15s
```
Which seems slightly better, but not a huge improvement, and the
progress bar is unfortunately also still jumpy. I'll write down the rest
of my learnings here in https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi/issues/14250.
I'm not entirely sure it's even worth merging this, but I'm putting this
up as a PR for further discussion and to show where the investigation
led.

When the detailedDiff object is empty, i.e. `{}`, it is dropped from the
serialized json due to the `omitempty`. When it is rehydrated on the
service, it is rehydrated as `nil` because it is not present in the json
object. That causes [this
line](516979770f/pkg/backend/display/rows.go (L442))
to be passed through and results in an input diff, which leads to the
output we see in the cloud of an import showing a lot of changed
properties when it should not (See issue for screenshots).

# Description
We want to parse config paths more strictly and not allow something like
"foo.[0]", but property paths everywhere else in the system need to
tolerate those keys.
Because of circular dependency on _pulumi/esc_ I kept a function with
old signature and added a new one. (instead of refactoring by adding new
parameter and exposing it)

Turn on the golangci-lint exhaustive linter. This is the first step
towards catching more missing cases during development rather than
in tests, or in production.
This might be best reviewed commit-by-commit, as the first commit turns
on the linter with the `default-signifies-exhaustive: true` option set,
which requires a lot less changes in the current codebase.
I think it's probably worth doing the second commit as well, as that
will get us the real benefits, even though we end up with a little bit
more churn. However it means all the `switch` statements are covered,
which isn't the case after the first commit, since we do have a lot of
`default` statements that just call `assert.Fail`.

Follow on from https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi/pull/15164 after team
discussion that importas was more value.
Opted to not make importas too strict to start. It still allows
individual go files to import modules with ad-hoc names, but at least
makes sure the "pulumirpc" module is always named the same.

github.com/golang/protobuf is marked deprecated and I was getting
increasingly triggered by the inconsistency of importing the `Empty`
type from "github.com/golang/protobuf/ptypes/empty" or
"google.golang.org/protobuf/types/known/emptypb" as "pbempty" or "empty"
or "emptypb". Similar for the struct type.
So this replaces all the Protobufs imports with ones from
"google.golang.org/protobuf", normalises the import name to always just
be the module name (emptypb), and adds the depguard linter to ensure we
don't use the deprecated package anymore.

`user.Current()` can potentially return nil in cases where the user
lookup fails, further there's a chance that `HomeDir` might be empty
even if a user is found. This makes both of these cases an error,
preventing a panic in the former and preventing trying to use
"/.pulumi/" in the later.

The project field on `GetProgramDependenciesRequest` and
`GetRequiredPluginsRequest` was marked deprecated at the start of
December. None of the language runtimes are using this, so this cleans
up the engine side code so we don't need to thread a
`*workspace.Project` down to the plugin layer to fill in these fields
anymore.
I haven't fully removed them from the Protobuf structs yet, we probably
could but just to give a little more time for people to get a clear
usage error if still using it.

This value was never actually used or correctly implemented, it was just
being used as a sentinal value for `Set/GetGlobalColorization`. We can
just use a pointer instead.
When we have a dev version from the dev CLI channel installed, we want
to warn whenever a new version is available, so the users can upgrade.
Do that, and also reduce the amount of time the version information is
cached, since we expect dev versions to be released much more frequently
than regular releases.
This needs https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi-service/pull/17429 to be
merged and deployed first.

Now that we support .zip archive sources for Pulumi New, we have all of
the API surface we need to provide a full Pulumi New experience using
Pulumi AI. This PR introduces a few modes of interacting with Pulumi AI
to generate Pulumi projects.
- The default `pulumi new` experience now begins with a choice between
`ai` and `template` modes - the `template` mode represents the current
state of running `pulumi new`, while `ai` provides an interactive
experience with Pulumi AI.
- The user can iteratively ask questions to improve or change the
resulting program - each time a prompt is completed, they are asked to
`refine`, `no`, or `yes` their session - `refine` allows a follow-on
prompt to be submitted. `no` ends the session without generating a
pulumi project, and `yes` generates a Pulumi project from the most
recent program returned by Pulumi AI.
- Additionally, top-level flags, `--ai` and `--language` are provided to
fill in default values for the AI mode. When a prompt is provided with a
language, it is automatically submitted to Pulumi AI - if either is
missing, the user is prompted for whichever value is missing.

Combination of a few cleanups.
1. Don't call .Error() on errors that are being passed to "%s" format
functions. Format will call `Error()` itself.
2. Don't call assert.Error then assert.Equal/Contains, just use
assert.ErrorEqual/ErrorContains instead.
3. Use "%w" if appropriate, instead of "%v"/"%s".

# Description
This adds an environment variable that changes output's `.toString` and
`.toJSON` methods to throw an exception instead of returning a string
containing a warning.
This feature mitigates the issue described in #4261 by allowing users to
opt in to having accidental toString calls (e.g. in a JS backtick string
that is missing `pulumi.interpolate`) throw an exception. The behaviour
ends up similar to the `get()` method of outputs, which throws an
exception.
I don't know how to write tests for this change, or even test it
manually.

This incorrectly added `err` as a parameter:
```
- return nil, errors.Errorf("%v plugin [%v] did not begin responding to RPC connections", prefix, bin)
+ return nil, fmt.Errorf("%v plugin [%v] did not begin responding to RPC connections: %w", prefix, bin, err)
```

Prompted by a comment in another review:

This lints that we don't use `fmt.Errorf` when `errors.New` will
suffice, it also covers a load of other cases where `Sprintf` is
sub-optimal.
Most of these edits were made by running `perfsprint --fix`.

# Description

This is two changes rolled together in a way.
Firstly passing some of the data that we pass on language runtime
startup to also pass it to Run/GetRequiredPlugins/etc. This is needed
for matrix testing, as we only get to start the language runtime up once
for that but want to execute multiple programs with it.
I feel it's also a little more consistent as we use the language
runtimes in other contexts (codegen) where there isn't really a root
directory, and aren't any options (and if we did do options the options
for codegen are not going to be the same as for execution). It also
means we can reuse a language host for shimless and substack programs,
as before they heavily relied on their current working directory to
calculate paths, and obviosly could only take one set of options at
startup. Imagine a shimless python package + a python root program, that
would have needed two startups of the python language host to deal with,
this unblocks it so we can make the engine smarter and only use one.
Secondly renaming some of the fields we pass to
Run/GetRequiredPlugins/etc today. `Pwd` and `Program` were not very
descriptive and had pretty non-obvious documentation:
```
string pwd = 3; // the program's working directory.
string program = 4; // the path to the program to execute.
```
`pwd` will remain, although probably rename it to `working_directory` at
some point, because while today we always start programs up with the
working directory equal to the program directory that definitely is
going to change in the future (at least for MLCs and substack programs).
But the name `pwd` doesn't make it clear that this was intended to be
the working directory _and_ the directory which contains the program.
`program` was in fact nearly always ".", and if it wasn't that it was
just a filename. The engine never sent a path for `program` (although we
did have some unit tests to check how that worked for the nodejs and
python hosts).
These are now replaced by a new structure with (I think) more clearly
named and documented fields (see ProgramInfo in langauge.proto).
The engine still sends the old data for now, we need to update
dotnet/yaml/java before we break the old interface and give Virtus Labs
a chance to update [besom](https://github.com/VirtusLab/besom).
